In a thrilling encounter at the EURO 2024, Hungary snatched a dramatic 1-0 victory over Scotland in the dying minutes of the game to keep their hopes of progression from Group A alive.
The game was the final group stage clash of the two sides, and either side needed at least a win to stand a chance of progressing to the knockout stages of the competition.
The Scots were left devastated as Kevin Csoboth struck in the 10th minute of stoppage time to break Scottish hearts and condemn them to an early exit from the tournament.
It was a game that had everything – passion, commitment, and no shortage of controversy. Scotland controlled possession for large periods but were unable to find a clinical edge in the final third. Hungary, on the other hand, defended resolutely and waited patiently for their opportunity.
That moment arrived in the final seconds of the game, as Hungary launched a rapid counter-attack and Kevin Csoboth coolly slotted the ball past Scotland’s Angus Gunn to spark wild celebrations among the Hungarian contingent.
The goal came as a crushing blow to Scotland, who had looked the more likely to score for much of the contest. John McGinn in particular was a constant threat, but the Aston Villa midfielder was unable to provide the finishing touch.
While Scotland’s European dreams have now been extinguished, Hungary can take immense pride in their performance. Despite going into the game on the back of an eight-match winless run in the competition, they showed tremendous character to grind out the victory.
The result means Hungary now have a real chance of progressing to the knockout stages. Sitting third in the group with three points, the side can still qualify as one of the best losers depending on how other teams in other groups perform.
For Scotland, their Euro journey comes to an end. It is a case of what might have been. Despite dominating possession and creating several decent openings, their inability to find the back of the net ultimately proved their undoing. It is a bitter pill to swallow, but they will be heading home first.
