Soroti City, the defending champions of the Women’s T20 League, are gearing up for another competitive season.
Last year, Soroti City claimed their maiden title, ending Aziz Damani’s streak of three consecutive championships.
Led by Victoria Pearls Captain Janet Mbabazi, they dominated the previous season, losing only one game.
This year, Soroti City faces new challenges, including a policy limiting the number of players in their squad, which has affected their preparations. Key players such as Kevin Awino, Phiona Kulume, Sarah Akiteng, and Christine Anayo have left the team.
However, new additions Esther Iloku, Proscovia Alako, Naume Amongin, and Kevin Amuge aim to bolster the squad.
“We are looking to build a new team so that players understand each other. If it gets us to win the title, it will be a bonus,” said Felix Musana, Chairman of Soroti City.
The championship will feature nine teams divided into two groups, with matches played in Lugogo, Entebbe, Jinja, and the new Florida Cricket Oval in Katosi. The top two teams from each group will advance to the semifinals.
Group A consists of Soroti City, Jinja SS, JACC, ACC, and Tornado Bee, while Group B includes Olila CC, Wanderers, Pioneer, and Tornado.
Joshua Mwanja, UCA Development Manager, emphasized the importance of domestic cricket for Uganda’s success, stating, “This competition will allow more female domestic players the opportunity to gain top-level experience and showcase their talents.”
The league also aims to grow women’s cricket participation by implementing rules that each club must feature a maximum of three national team players and at least two U19 girls’ players.
The fixtures for the season start on June 29, with the semifinals and finals scheduled for August.
