The seventh edition of the Uganda Para-Badminton International Championship has officially commenced, attracting athletes and coaches from 14 countries.
Building on the success of six previous editions, this ranking tournament is a vital event where players can earn points to improve their global standings and qualify for other major competitions, including the Global Tour and the Paralympics.
As a para event, the tournament features players with disabilities who compete in various categories such as standing lower, standing upper, and wheelchair.
These categories ensure fair competition among athletes with similar physical capabilities. The tournament format includes men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles.
Countries like India and Egypt are represented, with each nation aiming for top honours. This year’s championship highlights the international appeal and competitive spirit of the event.
The tournament follows a knockout format, meaning that once a player is defeated, they are out of the competition. This makes each match critical for advancement, as athletes compete not only for immediate victories but also for ranking points that will impact their future in the sport.
Among the participants is Badrinath Badri, a coach from India, who expressed his excitement about being part of the event.
“This is a BWF ranking championship, and gaining points here will help athletes qualify for higher level competitions such as BWF Level 2 and Level 1 tournaments. The next Level 1 tournament will be in Indonesia and Bahrain,” explained Badri.
With 45 players from India and a total of over 150 players participating in the championship, the tournament promises intense competition and opportunities for athletes to advance their careers on the international stage.
The event serves as a crucial platform for athletes aiming to improve their international rankings and secure their place in future high-level tournaments like the World Championships and Asian Games.
