EURO 2024: Turkey’s Demiral Banned, Bellingham Suspended for Controversial Goal Celebrations

The European Football governing body UEFA has banned Turkey’s star defender Merih Demiral and fined England’s Jude Bellingham for their controversial goal celebrations in their teams’ respective Round of 16 matches at EURO 2024.

Merih Demiral has been handed a 2-match ban by UEFA following his controversial goal celebration in the Turkey’s Round of 16 win over Austria.

Demiral, who scored both goals in his country’s 2-1 victory, made a gesture associated with the far-right “Grey Wolves” group, which is banned in Austria and considered a terror organisation by the European Union.

Despite Demiral claiming the celebration was connected to his Turkish identity, UEFA launched an investigation and has now ruled that the Al Ahli player will miss Turkey’s crucial quarter-final against the Netherlands, as well as the potential semi-final should they advance.

“I am incredibly proud to be Turkish, and I felt that pride deeply after scoring,” Demiral said in defense of his actions. “I wanted to express that, and I’m very happy I did. Our fans are proud of us,” he added.

However, UEFA’s regulations strictly prohibit the promotion or announcement, by any means, of political messages at their tournaments.

The governing body has taken a firm stance, delivering a major blow to Turkey’s hopes of progressing further in the competition.

In a separate incident, England midfielder Jude Bellingham was fined €20,000 for making controversial gestures during England’s 2-1 win over Slovakia also in the Round of 16.

After celebrating with the fans, Bellingham was observed blowing a kiss and making an obscene gesture, reportedly in the direction of the opposing bench.

While the 21-year-old claimed it was an “inside joke with friends,” UEFA deemed the actions unacceptable and handed down a financial penalty.

Unlike Demiral, Bellingham will be available for England’s quarter-final clash against Switzerland tomorrow, with the fine seen as a relatively lenient punishment compared to the two-match ban imposed on the Turkish defender.

These disciplinary issues come at a crucial stage of the tournament, with both Turkey and England still in contention for the EURO 2024 title.

Demiral’s absence will be a significant blow for the Turks, as they face the Netherlands tomorrow at the Olympiastadion at 10pm, while Bellingham will be relieved to have avoided a more severe sanction.
