Uganda will send a team of 22 athletes to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, with hopes of bringing home multiple gold medals.
The athletes will depart in three batches, with the first leaving on July 29, 2024, followed by the second on August 1, and the marathon team being the last to head to Paris.
The Ugandan team comprises 10 men and 12 women, each competing in various track and field events.
Among the men are Tarsis Gracious Orogot (200m), Tom Dradiga (800m), and world-renowned athletes Jacob Kiplimo and Joshua Cheptegei, both competing in the 5000m and 10000m.
The women’s team includes Halimah Nakaayi (800m), Winnie Nanyondo (1500m), and Peruth Chemutai (3000m SC), among others.
Joshua Cheptegei, who holds the world record in the 5000m and 10000m, and Jacob Kiplimo, the world record holder in the half marathon, are Uganda’s top contenders expected to secure gold medals. Their world-class performances have set high expectations for the Paris Olympics.
Preparation for the games is in full swing, with athletes training at the Trinity Bible Institute in Kapchorwa District and abroad.
A dedicated medical team is on hand to ensure the athletes are in peak condition, covering all aspects from coaching and nutrition to medical care.
Uganda Athletics Federation President, Dominic Otucet, emphasized the comprehensive support provided to the athletes, ensuring they receive balanced diets, sufficient rest, and intensive training.
Reflecting on Uganda’s success at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, where the team won two golds, a silver, and a bronze, Otucet expressed confidence in surpassing that achievement in Paris
“We are committed to providing our athletes with the best possible preparation. We are leaving no stone unturned to ensure they are ready for Paris,” Otucet stated.
The 2024 Olympic Games will be held in Paris from July 26 to August 11.
