Czech Republic First League side Slovan Liberec have announced the signing of Uganda Cranes left-back Aziz Kayondo from CB Leganes B on a four-year contract.

Kayondo, who has been playing for MFK Vyskov in the Czech Republic’s second tier on loan from Spain’s CB Leganes B, is set to bolster the Liberec defence until 2028.

The 21-year-old Ugandan defender already boasts of valuable experience in Czech competitions, having made a notable impact in the country with Vyskov, despite being limited to only five games due to injury.

Expressing his excitement after signing the four-year deal with Slovan Liberec, Kayondo said, “I am very grateful to be here. I am looking forward to playing for Slovan. The environment here is friendly and the facilities are very good. I can’t wait for the fans who will support us in the season.”

Kayondo, a product of St. Mary’s Kitende, started his footballing career at the school and played for the Vipers junior and senior teams between 2018 and 2022.

During his time with Vipers, he won the Uganda Premier League, the Uganda Cup, and the FUFA Super 8 tournament.

His move to Europe in 2022 saw him initially join MFK Vyskov on a four-year deal, where he was immediately loaned to the United States to MLS Next Pro side Real Monarchs, where he made 15 appearances and scored one goal.

A subsequent transfer to Spanish Segunda division club CD Leganes B followed in February 2023, which loaned him to Israeli club Hapoel Tel Aviv in July and later to Czech Republic second-tier club MFK Vyskov in January this year.

On the international stage, Kayondo has been a promising presence for Uganda’s national team since 2021, scoring once for the senior team.

He was also part of the Uganda Cranes squad for their recent World Cup qualifier game against Algeria, though he did not get the opportunity to play.

Slovan Liberec, which finished 7th in the 16-team Czech First League last season, is gearing up for an upcoming competitive season in a league where six teams face relegation.

The next season will start later this month with Slovan travelling to Karvina in their first league game that will be played on July 21st.

Slovan Liberec are one of the most successful in the Czech Republic, having won three league titles and the domestic cup since 1993.

Kayondo describes his playing style as an attacking left-back who supports the offence and delivers crosses.

His addition is expected to strengthen Slovan Liberec’s squad as they aim for a higher finish and to challenge top teams like Sparta Prague and Slavia Prague.
