Spain emerged victorious at the EURO 2024 Championship, defeating England 2-1 in a thrilling final at the Olympiastadion in Germany’s capital Berlin on Sunday evening.

The victory marked Spain’s fourth European Championship title, solidifying their status as the most successful team in the tournament’s history.

The match’s decisive moment came in the final minutes when substitute Mikel Oyarzabal scored the winning goal, breaking the deadlock after Cole Palmer had equalized Nico Williams’ opener.

The well-deserved win not only brought the coveted trophy back to Spain but also highlighted the outstanding performances of two of their key players: Rodri and Lamine Yamal.

Rodri, the 28-year-old Manchester City midfielder, was named the Player of the Tournament.

He played a pivotal role in Spain’s journey to the final, starting in six of their seven matches and scoring a crucial goal in the round-of-16 victory over Georgia.

Despite being forced off at halftime in the final due to a hamstring injury, Rodri’s influence throughout the tournament was undeniable. His leadership and skill in midfield were instrumental in Spain’s success.

Upon receiving the player of the tournament accolade, Rodri showed his gratitude and excitement as his side made history by clinching their fourth Euro crown.

“This is surely the best day of my career,” he said.

“We are European champions, as difficult as that is. We have become Europe’s most successful national team. We have made history, beating four former world champions in the process. We got through the toughest draw and it speaks for the mentality of the team.” The midfield maestro added.

Seventeen-year-old Lamine Yamal was awarded the Best Young Player of the Tournament, an accolade given to the best player aged 22 or younger.

Yamal, who just turned 17 a day before the final, also became the youngest player to score in the tournament and provided a tournament-high four assists.

By playing in the final, Yamal surpassed the legendary Pele to break the record of the youngest player to start in a Euro final, a game where he assisted Nico Williams’ opening goal, further cementing his reputation as one of football’s brightest young talents.

His contributions were crucial in Spain’s matches against formidable opponents, including hosts Germany and pre-tournament favorites France.

Overall, Spain’s road to the championship title was marked by impressive victories over some of the world’s top teams.

La Roja scored the most goals at the tournament (15), and won all their matches. They defeated Croatia, defending champions Italy and Albania in the group stages, debutants Georgia in the round of 16, hosts Germany in the quarters, France in the semis and England in the final.
