The Ugandan Table Tennis team has emerged as the undisputed champions at the recently concluded Africa Continental Hopes Championship held in Gaborone, Botswana from July 9th to 14th, 2024.

The Ugandan Hopes, which is the Under 11 (U11) team, comprising some of the country’s brightest young talents, set a new benchmark for excellence, winning a staggering 5 out of the 6 available medals at the prestigious continental event.

The standout performances were led by the girls’ team, who swept the podium, with Patience Anyango claiming the coveted Gold medal, Patra Nasirumbi securing the Silver, and Judith Mirembe taking home the Bronze.

In the boys’ category, Sir Joseph Sebatindira and Sharif Nsereko showcased their prowess, earning Silver and Bronze medals, respectively.

The exceptional results mean that three of the Ugandan players – Patience, Patra, and Sir Joseph – have qualified for the upcoming World Hopes Championships, which will take place in Paraguay in November 2024.

The world’s reigning U11 Number 1, Sir Joseph, faced a tough challenge from Ghana’s rising star, Israel Akli, but ultimately finished as the runner-up in a closely contested match.

Uganda’s remarkable achievement is a testament to the country’s commitment to nurturing young talent and the tireless efforts of the coaching staff, led by Alvin Katumba and his assistant, Ankunda Samuel, who have played a pivotal role in the team’s success.

This historic performance not only solidifies Uganda’s position as a rising force in African table tennis but also serves as a source of immense pride and inspiration for the nation’s budding athletes.
