Rwanda: Ex-Vipers Manager Off The Streets

Former Vipers head coach Roberto Oliveira alias Robertinho has been unemployed for a couple of months after his sacking at Tanzanian giants Simba in November 2023.

That is not the case anymore after signing as the new manager of Rwanda Premier League side Rayon Sports ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

The Brazilian tactician will be returning to the Rwandan outfit for a second spell after managing them in the 2018/19 season.

“We are pleased to announce that Brazilian international Roberto Oliveira Gonçalves do Carmo, known as “ROBERTINHO,” has been appointed as our Head Coach,” a club statement released on Monday read.

“Robertinho previously led us to victory in the Rwandan League in 2019, and we are excited to have him back to continue that successful journey. Welcome back, Legend!”

He succeeds Julien Mette. The French tactician left the club last month after he failed to reach a consensus with his bosses over a new contract.

The last time Rayon Sports won the Rwanda Premier League was during Robertinho’s previous tenure and they will be hoping that his return brings them back to glory.

He holds huge experience in African football and in Uganda, he is notably remembered for guiding Vipers to their first ever CAF Champions League group stage qualification.

Also during his first spell with Rayon Sports, he guided them to the quarterfinals of the CAF Confederation Cup while he reached the group stages of the Champions League with Simba.

Robertinho will manage former Villa striker Charles Bbaale and ex-Maroons goalkeeper Simon Tamale.
