Rafael Nadal powered through his opening-round match at the 2024 Paris Olympics, defeating Marton Fucsovics 6-1, 4-6, 6-4, and setting up a highly anticipated second-round clash with world No. 1 Novak Djokovic. This encounter will mark the 60th meeting between the two tennis legends.
Despite coming into the Olympics with concerns about the hectic scheduling, Nadal managed to secure his spot in the next round. He played in the night session of Day 1 with Carlos Alcaraz in doubles and had to return for his singles match the following afternoon.
“I don’t know if I’ll play tomorrow, I have to evaluate it with my team. Sometimes less is more,” Nadal remarked before his match. However, he confirmed his participation and took to Court Philippe-Chatrier to face Fucsovics.
Nadal started strong, taking the first set 6-1. Fucsovics fought back in the second set, breaking Nadal early and ultimately winning the set 6-4. In the decisive third set, Nadal broke serve to go 3-2 up and held on to take the match after nearly two and a half hours of play.
In his opener, Djokovic dominated Matthew Ebden with a 6-0, 6-1 victory. Speaking to the press, Djokovic expressed his readiness for the upcoming match against Nadal.
“It’s one of the matches or one of the events I guess that a lot of people at the Olympics in Paris this year are looking forward to. When the draw came out, we knew that there is a high probability that it might happen, so I’m ready for it. I’m looking forward to our last dance so to say, possibly on this court,” Djokovic said.
The winner of the Nadal-Djokovic clash is likely to face 14th seed Arthur Fils in the third round, adding another layer of excitement to the Olympic tennis event.
