The Uganda Rugby Union (URU) and the Kingdom of Buganda have announced the 2024 Kabaka Coronation Rugby 7s Cup.
This prestigious tournament, organized by Beyond Sports Organisation, will take place on Saturday, August 3, 2024, at the Muteesa II Stadium in Wankulukuku, marking a significant event in the local 7s series that includes both regional and invitational tournaments.
The Kabaka Coronation Rugby 7s Cup is a unique event that combines the thrill of rugby with the rich cultural heritage of the Buganda Kingdom to celebrate the coronation of Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II, the 36th Kabaka of Buganda.
The theme for this year’s tournament is “Men Against AIDS to Save the Girl Child,” highlighting the importance of community engagement and social responsibility.
Started in 2017 as a school’s tournament, the Kabaka Coronation 7s is being revamped this year after a hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.
The tournament will also include activities designed to raise awareness about AIDS prevention and support for the girl child, reflecting the tournament’s theme, which is also championed by the Buganda Kingdom.
Participating Women’s Teams include EWES, Avengers, and Kisubi Lady Pacers.
The Participating Men’s Teams on the other hand include, Rams, Mongers, Pirates, Buffaloes, Buddu Select, Walukuba Barbarians, and Pirates II.
The tournament will run from 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM with entry fees of 5K UGX (General Admission), and 20K UGX (VIP).
“We are excited to host the Kabaka Coronation Rugby 7s Cup, which not only celebrates the sport of rugby but also underscores our commitment to social causes such as the fight against AIDS and supporting the girl child,” said Godwin Kayangwe, President of the Uganda Rugby Union.
“We invite all rugby enthusiasts and the general public to join us for a day of sport, culture, and community,” he added.
