Ugandan long-distance runner Oscar Chelimo has called on Ugandans to keep faith and support him as he competes in the 5000m heats (semi-finals) today.
The 22-year-old athlete will be Uganda’s sole representative in the event after the withdrawal of compatriots Joshua Cheptegei and Jacob Kiplimo.
“I am telling my fans that don’t give up. We are Ugandans, and we shall fight for Uganda, so stay with hope and cheer for me. Don’t lose hope,” Chelimo said.
His message comes after the surprise withdrawals of Cheptegei, the world record holder for the 5000m and defending champion, and Kiplimo, the bronze medalist at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Cheptegei and Kiplimo both competed in the 10,000m race on August 2, with Cheptegei claiming gold.
Despite being strong contenders for medals in the 5000m, the duo decided to prioritize their health and recovery, opting out of the race.
Chelimo explained, “They have withdrawn because they are tired. In athletics, it’s the athlete who decides whether to run or not.”
With their withdrawal, Chelimo faces a challenging task as Uganda’s sole competitor in the 5000m race that will kick off at 12:10 PM today
He will be one of 41 athletes vying for a spot in the finals, needing to finish at least 16th overall in today’s heats to advance to the finals scheduled for Saturday, August 10.
“I am well prepared, and I’m going to do my best in the semi-finals (heats) because what matters now is to qualify for the finals,” Chelimo affirmed confidently.
