Paris 2024: Chemutai Set To Defend Crown

Peruth Chemutai fell short in her gold medal defence in the Olympic Games at Stade de France in Paris on Tuesday.

The steeplechaser would settle for silver in the women’s 3000m final with gold going to world champion Winfred Yavi of Bahrain.

Chemutai expressed her dissatisfaction in the aftermath of race and also revealed what the future looks like.

“I was not happy but all is well I will take the silver,” the 25-year-old said in an interview with sports journalist Allan Darren Kyeyune.

“It was a tight race with strong athletes and I believe that I tried my best. Going forward I think I need to work on my speed.”

“I should have won gold but with 50 meters to go I could not reach the finish line before my closest competitor,” she added.

Chemutai is looking forward to the Diamond League but most notably, she confirmed that she will not be competing at the World Championships.

“I am progressing well in my season and up next is preparing for the Diamond League. I will be working hard hoping to win.”

“After that, I will take a rest and later start preparing for the 2028 Olympics. I will not come to the World Championships,” the Tokyo 2020 gold medalist responded.

Chemutai was leading for the longest period before Yavi surpassed her while almost there.

The Ugandan posted 8:53.34, a national record whilst Yavi managed 8:52.76, an Olympic record time.
