UTB and Netball Federation Team Up to Champion Sports Tourism

By Daniel Nyeko

Sports and tourism are deeply intertwined and mutually beneficial. The She Cranes, Uganda’s national netball team, have consistently represented the Pearl of Africa on the international stage in various competitive netball tournaments.

A partnership between the Uganda Netball Federation (UNF) and the Uganda Tourism Board (UTB) is set to be highly beneficial, with the Uganda Tourism Board leveraging its marketing expertise to promote sports tourism in the country.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Uganda Tourism Board, Dr. Lilly Ajarova, a staunch advocate for both sports and tourism, envisions a fruitful collaboration with the Uganda Netball Federation through several strategic initiatives:

1. Sports Tourism Packages: The development of attractive sports tourism packages that combine netball events with Uganda’s top tourist attractions, such as gorilla trekking, sightseeing, and cultural experiences, will be a key focus.

2. International Netball Tournaments: By hosting international netball tournaments and events, Uganda can leverage the marketing expertise of the Uganda Tourism Board to attract tourists from across the globe.

3. Player and Community Engagement: Enhanced engagement with both players and communities is essential. This can be achieved through the organization of netball clinics, workshops, and exhibitions at tourist sites, which will engage both the local community and visiting tourists.

4. Marketing Campaigns: Joint marketing campaigns should be emphasized to highlight Uganda’s netball talents and rich tourism offerings, creating a compelling narrative that attracts both sports fans and tourists alike.

5. Netball-Themed Tourism Initiatives: The introduction of netball-themed tours, including visits to netball clubs and opportunities to meet players, will offer a unique and immersive experience for tourists.

6. Infrastructure Development: The Uganda Tourism Board can play a significant role in upgrading netball facilities, making them more tourist-friendly and increasing their capacity to host large-scale events.

7. Co-Branded Merchandise: The development of co-branded merchandise, such as jerseys, scarves, and hats featuring both the Uganda Tourism Board and Uganda Netball Federation logos, will help promote these initiatives both locally and internationally.

8. Capacity Building: Emphasis will also be placed on training and capacity-building programs for netball officials, coaches, and players to enhance the quality of netball tournaments and events.

9. Sponsorship and Branding: The Uganda Tourism Board can sponsor Uganda Netball Federation events, while the UNF can promote UTB’s tourism initiatives, thereby increasing brand visibility and fostering a stronger connection between sports and tourism.

This partnership holds great potential for both sports and tourism in Uganda, offering a pathway to showcase the nation’s talent and natural beauty to the world.
