Ugandan long-distance runner Oscar Chelimo’s pursuit of a maiden Olympic medal ended in disappointment on Saturday night as he finished 20th in the Men’s 5000m final at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Chelimo, who was the only Ugandan competitor in the race, posted a time of 13:31.56, well off the pace of the leading pack in a field stacked with elite runners.
The gold medal was won by Norway’s Jakob Ingebrigtsen, who delivered a commanding performance, crossing the finish line in 13:13.66.
Ingebrigtsen had set the stage for his 5000m triumph by dominating his semi-final heat by finishing first, and he maintained that form in the final to secure his first Olympic gold in this event.
Ronald Kwemoi of Kenya claimed the silver medal, his first Olympic silverware, with a time of 13:15.04, narrowly edging out Grant Fisher of the United States, who took bronze in 13:15.13.
Dominic Lokinyomo Lobalu, who is originally from South Sudan, but represents the Refugee Olympic Team, put on a remarkable performance to finish fourth, just missing out on a medal by 14 seconds.
Lobalu’s near-podium finish added to his inspiring journey as an athlete representing displaced communities.
Chelimo’s performance, although valiant, saw him finish ahead of only two other competitors—Great Britain’s George Mills and Canada’s Thomas Fafard, who came in 21st and 22nd respectively.
Despite this, his participation in the final was a significant personal achievement, especially given the absence of Uganda’s star runners, Joshua Cheptegei and Jacob Kiplimo, both of whom withdrew from the event due to fatigue.
