Uganda’s Young Stars Gear Up for World Athletics U20 Championships in Lima

Uganda is set to showcase its burgeoning track talent at the World Athletics U20 Championships in Lima, Peru, from August 27-31, 2024.

The event, hosted at the Estadio Atletico de la Videna, will see over 1700 athletes from 134 nations competing, and Uganda’s youthful team is eager to make its mark.

Among the standout athletes in the men’s category is Hosea Chemutai, a versatile middle-distance runner born on December 13, 2006. Chemutai will compete in the 1500 metres with a personal best of 3:44.17, and the 3000 metres steeplechase, where he has clocked an impressive 8:51.44.

Joining him is fellow distance runner Samuel Simba Cherop, born on July 3, 2006, who will participate in three events: the 1500 metres, the 3000 metres, and the 5000 metres.

Harbert Kibet, born on June 17, 2005, adds strength to Uganda’s long-distance lineup in the 3000 metres, with a personal best of 8:06.50.

Meanwhile, Keneth Kiprop, one of Uganda’s most promising young talents, will be competing in the 5000 metres, boasting a personal best time of 13:15.90. Titus Musau, born on August 7, 2006, will join the 3000 metres race, while Jacob Sande, born on December 15, 2006, rounds out Uganda’s men’s team in the 1500 metres.

On the women’s side, Uganda’s contingent is led by Keziah Chebet, born on November 27, 2008, who will compete in the 3000 metres.

Loice Chekwemoi, born on December 12, 2006, is set to compete in the 3000 metres steeplechase, where she has clocked a personal best of 9:24.47. Joining her in the steeplechase is Nancy Chepkwurui, born on June 14, 2007, who has a personal best of 10:17.86.

Uganda’s women’s distance running strength continues with Charity Cherop, born on July 4, 2007, competing in the 5000 metres. Additionally, Bentalin Yeko, born on November 6, 2007, will compete in the 3000 metres race.

As these young athletes prepare to compete on the world stage, Uganda will be hoping to build on past successes and secure a strong performance in Lima.

The official start lists will be confirmed after the technical meeting on the eve of the championships.
