A significant shake-up has hit Ugandan rugby as the Uganda Rugby Union (URU) in the wee hours of Friday morning announced disciplinary action against star player and Rugby Cranes captain, Ivan Magomu.
The Stanbic Bank Black Pirates stalwart has been suspended from all rugby activities for a period of 24 weeks, effective today August 16, 2024.
Additionally, Magomu has been relieved of his captaincy duties for the Uganda Rugby National Men’s XVs team.
The decision follows a disciplinary hearing on August 8, where Magomu faced allegations of misconduct towards a match official and conduct detrimental to the sport for making a comment on NCS’ General Secretary Bernard Ogwel.
The URU Disciplinary Committee, after careful deliberation, found the charges substantiated and imposed the aforementioned sanctions.
The Stanbic Bank Black Pirates Rugby Club has also been informed of the disciplinary action and its implications for their captain.
The union also confirmed that Magomu has lodged an appeal, which will be handled by an Appeals Committee in accordance with the URU Constitution.
Until the appeal process is concluded, the URU has pledged to refrain from making further public statements on the matter.
