Katwiremu, Kagombe Claim Senior Golf Titles

Steven Katwiremu reaffirmed his dominance in the senior golf circuit by successfully defending his title at the 2024 Johnnie Walker Uganda Seniors Golf Open.

The seasoned golfer secured the male category championship with a solid total of 165 after two rounds at Entebbe Golf Club.

Katwiremu, a regular in senior golf, navigated a challenging final round to claim victory.

Despite a late wobble that saw him drop strokes on the final holes, he managed to finish with an 82 on the day, holding off a determined challenge from Peter Obita.

The final round saw Katwiremu’s commanding performance on the front nine, where he carded a three-over par, marred only by a bogey on the opening hole and a double bogey on the par-4 fourth.

His ability to maintain composure under pressure was evident as he finished two strokes ahead of Obita, who ended with a total of 167.

John Muchiri, Tony Kisadha, Isaac Mariera, and Godfrey Onyango Matata followed in that order with totals of 169, 171, 173, and 173, respectively.

Katwiremu’s blend of powerful driving and a surprisingly effective short game, coupled with his mental fortitude, secured him the top spot once again.

“It wasn’t easy; I took it step by step, process by process.” Katwiremu said after defending his title.

In the women’s championship, Edrae Kagombe emerged victorious with a total gross score of 178, following a round of 88.

Her performance was sufficient to hold off Catherine Pavie, who finished two strokes behind with a total of 180.

Jenina Nasimolo struggled on the final day, carding 94 to drop to fourth place with a total of 184, while Katy Kabenge secured third with a score of 182.

Veteran competitors Grace Obua, Gertrude Kityo, Ruth Ssali, Joan Kyatuka, Caroline Karungi, and Willemien Hamminga also participated.

Attention now shifts to the Johnnie Walker Uganda Ladies Golf Open’s final round on Saturday, where Uganda’s Martha Babirye holds a slender one-stroke lead.
