The R&A, the governing body of golf outside North America, has made a significant contribution to the development of junior golf in Uganda.
The organization has partnered with Mizuno and GolfWay to donate a substantial amount of equipment to the AFRIYEA Golf Academy, a program focused on nurturing young golfing talent in the country.
The donated equipment, which includes lightweight and durable clubs, is specifically designed to be age-appropriate and easy to handle, making it ideal for young players to develop their basic skills.
The R&A believes that providing access to quality equipment is crucial for fostering a love of golf and encouraging participation, especially in regions where the sport is not as widely played.
“The R&A is pleased to support the Uganda Golf Union and the AFRIYEA Golf Academy in their efforts to grow the game of golf across the country,” said Kevin Barker, Director of Golf Development for The R&A.
“We are confident that this contribution will help inspire and equip the next generation of golfers in Uganda.”
Dr. Jackson Were, President of the Uganda Golf Union, expressed his gratitude for the donation, stating that it will significantly enhance access to the sport for junior players.
“As an inclusive organization, the Uganda Golf Union is committed to working closely with golf clubs, affiliate associations, academies, and schools to cultivate a vibrant golfing community in Uganda,” he said.
The AFRIYEA Golf Academy, founded by Isaiah Mwesige, is a junior golf development program that aims to promote golf, life skills, and sustainability within Ugandan schools and communities.
Mwesige expressed his appreciation for the donation, saying that it will provide his juniors with the necessary tools to develop their golf skills and techniques.
“The contribution of this equipment by The R&A and the Uganda Golf Union is a tremendous boost to our youth programs,” said Mwesige.
“Our juniors have made significant progress over the past few years, and it is our goal to see some of them participate in the Africa Amateur Championship, a new annual initiative by The R&A aimed at further growing the game in Africa.”
