The stage is set for the FIBA U18 Women’s AfroBasket 2024 as the group draw took place in Kigali, Rwanda.
Uganda’s national U18 women’s basketball team, nicknamed the “Junior Gazelles,” have been placed in Group C alongside Egypt, Zimbabwe, and Nigeria.
The tournament will be held in Pretoria, South Africa, from September 1st to 13th.
Twelve teams will compete in the tournament, divided into three groups of four.
Egypt is a perennial powerhouse in African basketball and will be a formidable opponent for the Gazelles.
Zimbabwe were granted a wildcard entry and remain a force to be reckoned with. Their performance will be one to watch.
Nigeria is another African basketball giant, boasting a highly skilled team that will be a tough test for the Ugandan Gazelles.
The competition format involves a round-robin group stage, followed by a knockout phase for the top teams.
Only the top two teams from each group and the two best third-placed teams will advance to the quarterfinals.
The finalists of the FIBA U18 Women’s AfroBasket will represent Africa at next year’s FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup in the Czech Republic.
