2025 AFCON Qualifiers: Kenya Arrive in Uganda Ahead of Clash with Zimbabwe

The Kenya national football team, Harambee Stars, have arrived safely in Uganda ahead of their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers opening clash against Zimbabwe this Friday.

The team, led by head coach Engin Firat, touched down at Entebbe International Airport earlier today and will use the Mandela National Stadium, Namboole as the venue for their home fixture against The Warriors.

The Harambee Stars squad that arrived includes goalkeepers Levis Opiyo, Patrick Matasi and Byrne Omondi, as well as a defensive unit comprising Sharrif Majabe, Johnstone Omurwa, Amos Nondi and others.

In midfield, Chris Erambo, Anthony Akumu and Kenneth Muguna, also touched down, together with fowards including John Avire, Benson Omalla and Victor Omune.

Captain Michael Olunga, along with Jonah Ayunga, Eric Ouma, Joseph Okumu and Richard Odada, are expected to join the squad in Uganda ahead of the Zimbabwe clash.

Kenya does not currently have a CAF-licensed stadium within its borders, prompting the decision to host the match in neighbouring Uganda.

After facing the Warriors on September 6, Kenya will turn their attention to a match against Namibia on September 10 in South Africa as the team looks to secure qualification for the 2025 AFCON tournament.

Kenya finds itself in Group J for the qualifiers, alongside Zimbabwe, Namibia and Cameroon.

A top-two finish in the group would guarantee the Harambee Stars a spot at the 2025 continental showpiece, which is scheduled to take place from December 21, 2025 to January 18, 2026.

Kenya will then jointly host the 2027 edition, together with East African counterparts Uganda and Tanzania.
