Uganda’s national football team coach, Paul Put, has expressed his unwavering determination to lead the Cranes to their maiden FIFA World Cup appearance.
In a recent interview with FIFA, Put outlined his vision for the team and shared his passion for African football.
“Qualifying for the World Cup would be the ultimate achievement of my career,” Put declared. “It would surpass everything I’ve accomplished so far.”
Uganda currently finds itself in a competitive qualifying group for World Cup 26. The Pearl of Africa are fifth with 6 points, 3 behind the table leaders.
However, Paul Put remains optimistic about their chances.
The Belgian coach emphasized the unique nature of playing for a national team.
“Representing your country is a special feeling,” he explained. “I try to motivate my players by reminding them of the significance of wearing the Uganda jersey.”
Put’s love for African football is evident. “Coaching in Africa is incredibly rewarding,” he said. “The respect for coaches and the deep cultural connection to football make it a unique experience.”
A successful World Cup campaign would not only be a historic achievement for Uganda but also a significant boost as the country prepares to co-host the CAF Africa Cup of Nations in 2027.
“Qualifying for the World Cup would provide us with valuable experience and allow us to integrate young talent into the team,” Put stated.
Football is deeply ingrained in Ugandan culture. “It’s a part of life here,” Put observed. “Regardless of their circumstances, people have a passion for football.”
African teams have been making strides in recent World Cup tournaments. Put believes this trend will continue.
“Many African players are excelling in foreign clubs,” he noted. “I expect African teams to achieve great things in the near future.”
As a football fan himself, Put shared a personal World Cup memory that has stayed with him.
“Belgium’s 1-0 victory over Argentina in 1982 is one of my favorite World Cup moments,” he recalled.
