Uganda’s U-20 athletics team returned home on Monday September 2nd from the 2024 World Junior Athletics Championships in Lima, Peru, with a silver medal and two bronze medals.
Loyce Chekwemoi, a rising star in the 3000-meter steeplechase, secured the silver medal for Uganda. Meanwhile, Kenneth Kiprop and Charity Cherop claimed bronze medals in the 5000-meter events in the men’s and women’s categories, respectively.
Dominic Otuchet, the president of the Uganda Athletics Federation, expressed his pride in the team’s achievements. He emphasized that the young athletes’ success not only brought honor to Uganda but also attracted international attention to the country’s burgeoning athletics scene.
Joshua Cheptegei, the reigning Olympic 1000-meter gold medalist, praised the young talent for their potential.
He stressed that the team’s performance demonstrated that track running in Uganda is not solely dependent on a few individuals but is a growing sport with a bright future.
Hosea Chemutai, the team captain, highlighted the importance of international competitions for the development of young athletes.
He emphasized that participating in such events allows them to learn from experienced competitors and improve their skills.
The Uganda Athletics Federation hopes that the team’s success will inspire even more young athletes to pursue their dreams in the sport.
