Uganda’s Minister of State for Sports, Hon. Peter Ogwang, has expressed his deep sorrow following the tragic death of Olympian Rebecca Cheptegei.
The long-distance runner passed away in Kenya after a petrol attack by her estranged boyfriend, an incident that is being investigated by Kenyan authorities.
In a statement issued this morning, Hon. Ogwang described the news as “disturbing” and extended his heartfelt condolences to Cheptegei’s family, the sports community, and Ugandans at large.
“I have just received disturbing news about the tragic death of Uganda’s athlete Rebecca Cheptegei this morning in Kenya,” the minister stated. “The Kenyan authorities are investigating the circumstances under which she died, and a more detailed report & program will be provided in due course.”
Cheptegei, a celebrated long-distance runner, recently represented Uganda at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where she competed in the marathon.
Her death has sent shockwaves through the athletics community, with many recalling her dedication and contribution to the sport.
The minister concluded his statement by offering his deepest condolences to those affected by Cheptegei’s passing, saying, “I send my deepest condolences to the family, relatives, sports fraternity, and Ugandans at large.”
The Ugandan sports fraternity is now awaiting further details on the burial arrangements. Her passing marks a significant loss for the nation, particularly within the world of athletics, where she had been a prominent figure.
