The 2024-25 Pepsi University Football League (UFL) season is set to kick off with a tantalizing clash between former champions Uganda Christian University (UCU) and St. Lawrence University on Tuesday, September 17, at 3:00 PM in Mukono.
The two teams have a history of competitive encounters, with UCU emerging victorious in the 2019 final to claim their first and only UFL title.
While UCU narrowly missed out on a second title last season, falling to Nkumba University in the final, they enter this season with renewed determination.
Coach Kintu Mwera of UCU expressed optimism about his team’s chances despite being drawn in a challenging group alongside St. Lawrence, Kabale University, and YMCA.
“We’ve been playing well, reaching the final twice in three seasons,” Mwera said. “While the group is tough, I believe we can make it.”
UCU’s home record last season was impressive, with four wins and a draw. Mwera emphasized the importance of maintaining this form as they strive for a second UFL title.
St. Lawrence University, led by Davis Nnono, is also gearing up for the season and aiming to upset UCU. Nnono expressed confidence in his team’s preparation and highlighted the significance of winning their opening match.
“Every game is crucial to topping the group,” he said. “UCU is a strong team, but we’ll do everything possible to win.”
