Ugandan football fans will be interested to learn that former Uganda Cranes coach Milutin “Micho” Sredojević has been sacked by the Libyan Football Federation (LFF) just weeks before their crucial Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Nigeria.
Micho’s dismissal comes despite a recent six-month contract extension. The LFF reportedly made the decision due to a string of disappointing results in the qualifiers. Libya drew 1-1 at home to Rwanda and lost 2-1 away to Benin despite leading at halftime in both matches.
Libyan sports audiences are said to be particularly critical of Micho’s choices for the national team. According to Sports Village Square, they believe his selections lacked strength and ultimately led to the underwhelming results.
The Libyan team, nicknamed the “Mediterranean Knights,” will now face the formidable Super Eagles of Nigeria in a doubleheader next month.
The first leg will be played in Uyo, Nigeria on October 6th, with the return leg scheduled for the 11th of July Stadium in Tripoli on October 14th.
Sources close to the LFF suggest the federation is looking to appoint a domestic coach to lead the team through the remaining AFCON qualifiers.
Micho coached the Uganda Cranes in two stints, guiding them to their first ever appearance at the Africa Cup of Nations finals in 2017.
He has close connections to the Ugandan football scene and it remains to be seen if he could return in a coaching role at any of the clubs.
