Husina Kobugabe is a popular name in Ugandan sport especially in the game of Badminton. However, that wasn’t the case a couple of years ago.
Speaking to NBS Sport after the launch of the 2024 City Tyres Badminton Challenge in Industrial Area on Wednesday, Kobugabe reflected on her evolution.
“Today I am popular because of this game (badminton) and I have always conducted myself with great enthusiasm,” Kobugabe said before adding.
“It’s the hunger to succeed that has brought me this far and still, I personally think the journey is still on.”
“Badminton has educated me to degree level and I am looking forward to pursuing a masters and it has also helped me to foot a lot of bills so I can’t be prouder,” she added.
The 23-year-old has represented Uganda at a number of major tournaments but the 2023 All Africa Games in Ghana etches louder.
With her partner Gladys Mbabazi, they became the first Ugandan players to win gold in the Women’s doubles.
“It was a historical moment and it still rings in my mind and I am looking forward to bringing such accolades home from international tournaments like the Olympics,” she noted.
She’ll be part of team Uganda at the forthcoming East African Badminton Challenge set for October 17 to 20 at the Lugogo Indoor Arena.
Kobugabe anticipates that she will put up a brilliant performance as she continues to inspire others in the game of badminton.
“A number of kids coming into the sport look up to me and that is encouraging. I am hopeful that I will perform well and am also optimistic that the whole team will have a good outing,” she stated.
It will be the seventh edition of the East African Badminton Challenge and a number of teams from the region are expected to confirm their participation.
