The Uganda Woodball National Team is facing significant financial hurdles as they gear up for the 9th World Cup Woodball Championship in China this October.
Despite being in training at Bunjakko Beach in Mpigi District, the team’s financial situation remains uncertain.
Players, who have been promised allowances during their 3-7 week residential camp, are expressing frustration and concern over their financial obligations.
Some players have even pleaded to be released from the camp to address pressing family matters.
Team Captain Daniel Apita Olimba highlighted the challenges faced by the players, stating, “It’s challenging for some of us who have families to take care of.”
He appealed to the Uganda Woodball Federation to advance some payments to alleviate the financial strain.
In response, the Federation General Secretary Collins Ssemanda assured the players that the federation is working diligently to resolve the financial issues and ensure a smooth camp experience.
The National Team requires over $350,000 to cover the costs of their participation, including a youth team. Despite the government allocating funds for sports, the woodball team has yet to receive their share.
Other sports, such as football, have already received their first-quarter funding to prepare for the African Cup of Nations.
With time running out before the team’s departure, the Uganda Woodball Federation is now exploring alternative sources of funding.
