Uganda Cranes attacking midfielder Travis Mutyaba is set to officially join French side FC Girondins de Bordeaux, as the 20-year old player is currently undergoing medicals at the club.
Mutyaba’s impending move to Bordeaux marks a significant step in his career, as he prepares to not only join a club with a rich history in French football, but also play alongside celebrated football stars.
Bordeaux, though currently competing in the fourth tier Championnat National 2, are six-time Ligue 1 champions, having won the titles in 1950, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1999, and 2009.
But perhaps the most intriguing aspect of this transfer is the prospect of Mutyaba linking up with former England international and Premier League veteran Andy Carroll.
The 35-year-old striker, known for his aerial prowess and physical presence, joined Bordeaux on September 18, 2024, after a stint with Amiens in Ligue 2.
Carroll, who has represented top English clubs including Newcastle United, Liverpool, and West Ham United, scoring 71 goals in total for them, made an immediate impact at Bordeaux.
He scored a brace on his debut in a 2-2 draw against Voltigeurs de Chateaubriant, showcasing that he still possesses the goal-scoring touch that once made him one of the Premier League’s most feared strikers.
For Mutyaba, the opportunity to play alongside Carroll could prove invaluable for his development.
The young playmaker, primarily an attacking midfielder, will have the chance to hone his skills in creating chances for a striker of Carroll’s caliber.
This partnership could potentially flourish, benefiting both the players and Bordeaux in their quest for promotion.
Having already established himself as a regular in the Uganda Cranes squad, Mutyaba is widely regarded as one of the most promising talents to emerge from Ugandan football in recent years.
Bordeaux, despite their illustrious history, find themselves in a challenging position in the Championnat National 2.
Currently sitting second from bottom in Group B with just three points from four games, the club will be hoping that the additions of experienced professionals like Carroll and emerging talents like Mutyaba can spark a turnaround in their fortunes.
