Uganda’s Deputy Speaker, Thomas Tayebwa, shared a light-hearted moment with Manchester United goalkeeper Andrey Onana on Sunday, joking that Onana might have Ugandan roots.
During their meeting at Sheraton Hotel in Kampala, Tayebwa remarked, “Our tribe, the Bakiga, migrated from Cameroon. Who knows, maybe Onana is my younger brother!”
Tayebwa, himself a Mukiga from Mitoma District, drew connections between the two nations, referencing similarities in food and culture between Uganda and Cameroon.
He added, “When I visited Cameroon earlier this year, I noticed the food, yams, sweet potatoes, beans, was just like Ugandan food.”
Onana, who is in Uganda for Cameroon’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Kenya, was all smiles during the encounter.
The playful exchange highlighted the deep cultural ties between Uganda and Cameroon, as well as Tayebwa’s pride in seeing an African player excel at the highest levels of global football.
Cameroon will face Kenya at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole, in the AFCON qualifier on Monday.
