The MTN Kopu P’Ubimu inter-county football tournament continued over the weekend, with Okoro County suffering a crushing 2-0 defeat to Padyere County, marking their early exit from the competition.
The match, played at Kaya Primary School in Paidha, Zombo District, saw Padyere dominate from the start, with Oscar Ngirinege opening the scoring in the 38th minute.
Epiphany Opakrwoth sealed the victory for Padyere in the 65th minute, sending Okoro County crashing out of the tournament without a single goal or point.
Despite their disappointing performance, Okoro County will still be officially recognized for participating in the 7th edition of the MTN Kopu P’Ubimu tournament.
However, their record of zero goals scored and seven conceded over four matches is a stark reminder of their struggles.
Padyere County’s head coach, Gilbert Jakuma, expressed his satisfaction with the victory and reiterated his team’s determination to win the tournament.
“We are focused on winning the 7th edition of the MTN Kopu P’Ubimu Cup final,” Jakuma said. “My team has built a strong foundation, and we’re targeting a win come October 19th.”
Padyere County will now face off against Jonam County on October 16 in a crucial match that will determine the final positioning before the highly anticipated finale on October 19th.
In addition to the football action, the 3rd edition of the MTN Kopu P’Ubimu bicycle races took place in Paidha Town Council. Isaac Ocopi emerged as the winner in the men’s 10-kilometer race, while Oliver Awekonimungu claimed victory in the women’s event.
MTN’s Territory Sales Manager, Godwin Taban, praised the participants for their commitment and urged them to invest their prize money wisely.
“We appreciate your efforts and your engagement with MTN,” Taban said.
“Participating in these activities alongside the kingdom speaks volumes about our brand and its impact.”
As the MTN Kopu P’Ubimu competition draws to a close, the kingdom eagerly awaits the 14th coronation anniversary of His Majesty Phillips Olarker Rauni III on October 26, 2024.
Ker Alur Executive Director, Vincent Ochaya, highlighted the cultural significance of the event and noted that the King will deliver important messages about culture and development.
The final football match on October 19 will serve as a fitting climax to the sporting activities before the coronation celebrations at Bar Omach.
