AFCON 2025 Finals on the Horizon for Uganda Cranes

Uganda Cranes continued their unbeaten run in the AFCON 2025 qualifying campaign with a 2-1 victory over South Sudan.

The win, secured at the Juba Stadium, keeps Uganda at the top of Group K, edging them closer to their first Africa Cup of Nations appearance since 2019.

A goal from Denis Omedi in the 15th minute and an own goal by South Sudan’s Alfred Leku in the 66th minute sealed the victory for Uganda, despite Yohanma Juma’s 21st-minute equaliser for South Sudan.

The game saw Uganda dominate from the start, with more possession and an early goal. Omedi drilled home the opener from the edge of the box after an assist by Allan Okello.

However, South Sudan responded quickly, as Juma leveled the score with a well-executed strike.

Uganda made tactical changes in the second half, bringing on Travis Mutyaba and Timothy Awany to increase their attacking threat.

Their efforts paid off when a free-kick from Mutyaba deflected off Leku’s shoulder for an own goal, restoring Uganda’s lead.

With this victory, Uganda now sits atop Group K with 10 points from four matches. They are one step away from sealing qualification, which could be confirmed if South Africa defeats Congo in Brazzaville.

This win also marked Uganda’s first away AFCON qualifying victory since September 2023, when they defeated Niger 2-0 in Marrakech.

The Cranes are on the brink of making another AFCON appearance, a feat they last achieved in 2019.
