Former Manchester United coach Benni McCarthy has ignited controversy with his recent comments on both club and international football.
McCarthy, a decorated player who lifted the Champions League trophy with Porto in 2004, served as a striking coach at Manchester United under manager Erik ten Hag.
However, McCarthy seems to have reservations about ten Hag’s leadership style.
In an interview with SuperSport, McCarthy commended ten Hag’s work ethic, highlighting the manager’s meticulous attention to detail and tireless dedication.
However, he questioned whether ten Hag possesses the intangibles needed to lead a team to a championship.
McCarthy implied that ten Hag’s relentless focus may lack the passion required to truly inspire players.
McCarthy’s outspokenness extended to the South African national team, Bafana Bafana.
While acknowledging the team’s recent progress, reaching the semi-finals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), McCarthy expressed doubts about the current management’s ability to unlock the team’s full potential.
He praised the emergence of talented young players but cautioned that a “little bit of shortage” exists within the squad.
McCarthy stopped short of directly criticizing the current manager, but his comments imply a belief that a change in leadership could propel Bafana Bafana to the next level.
