Today, October 16, marks the much-anticipated return of the StarTimes Uganda Premier League after the international break, with two thrilling fixtures lined up for day one of Match Day 5.
Newcomers Lugazi and Mbale Heroes will battle it out in an Eastern derby at Lugazi Stadium in Najjembe, while Police host Express at Kavumba, both matches kicking off at 4 p.m.
Lugazi vs Mbale Heroes: Clash of Struggling Entrants
At Lugazi Stadium in Najjembe, newly promoted sides Lugazi and Mbale Heroes are set to clash, each desperate for a crucial three points.
Lugazi, currently sitting at the bottom of the table with just one point from four games, are eager for their first win of the season.
Mbale Heroes on the other hand, who are 13th with three points, are equally in need of a victory to avoid slipping into the relegation zone.
This fixture marks Asaph Mwebaze’s first game as head coach of Mbale Heroes, following the departure of Richard Malinga under mysterious circumstances after three matches.
Mwebaze will be under pressure to make an immediate impact, knowing that a victory could lift his side temporarily to 10th place.
For Lugazi, coach Sadiq Sempigi faces mounting pressure to secure a maiden win for his side in front of their home fans. The win would lift Lugazi out of the drop zone, atleast temporarily.
Police vs Express: High Stakes in Kavumba
Meanwhile, at Kavumba Recreation Grounds, Police FC hosts Express FC in a match that could significantly impact both teams’ standings.
Police, buoyed by their most recent 1-0 win over Kitara, currently sit 9th on the table with six points.
A victory today could propel them to 3rd, just one point behind leaders KCCA and level with second-placed NEC.
Express on the other hand, are coming off a morale-boosting 2-1 win against NEC, and are also eyeing the top spots.
With seven points, a win would see the Red Eagles temporarily leap to second place, and a victory by a six-goal margin could even see them top the table—albeit briefly.
Express are also looking for their first win on the road since January. They last picked up an away win on January 3, against Arua Hill in a match that ended 1-0 in their favour.
Police will be without striker Brian Obed due to injury, and Denis Iguma remains a doubt after a personal loss.
Express, meanwhile, are boosted by the return of Sam Ssenyonjo, who missed the last two games.
Historically, Express have had the upper hand in this fixture, winning 10 of the last 20 Premier League meetings between the sides.
However, Police’s formidable home record, unbeaten in 16 league matches, from last season where they clinched the FUFA Big League Title, will make this a challenging encounter for the visitors, who have struggled on the road, winning just two of their last 10 away league matches.
