Analyzing the Stats: Why Lugazi Made the Tough Call on Sempigi

Lugazi Football Club’s decision to part ways with head coach Sadiq Sempigi comes in the wake of a challenging start to their season, with both their results and underlying statistics revealing a team struggling to adapt to the demands of the top flight.

After five matches, Lugazi have yet to register a win, scoring just once and finding themselves at the bottom of the Uganda Premier League table.

The club’s campaign began with a heavy 3-0 loss to Kitara, a defeat that set the tone for what has been a difficult run of form.

Subsequent matches showed little improvement, with Lugazi falling 1-0 to UPDF in their second game, followed by a goalless draw against Vipers, which earned them their first point of the season.

Despite the brief glimmer of hope, a 1-0 loss to Maroons quickly dashed any momentum, and Wednesday’s 1-1 draw against Mbale Heroes rounded off the disappointing start.

Through five matches, Lugazi have failed to score in four, managing just one goal in a 1-1 draw at home against Mbale Heroes.

Their inability to find the back of the net is reflected in their average of 0.2 goals per game. With four matches in which they failed to score, it became clear that Sempigi’s side was lacking any consistent threat in attack.

Defensively, Lugazi has been equally vulnerable, conceding six goals and averaging 1.2 goals conceded per match, with their heaviest defeat being the 3-0 loss to Kitara.

At home, the club has struggled to make their Lugazi Stadium a fortress. They drew two of their three home matches and lost one.

On the road, the results have been even worse, with Lugazi failing to score in either of their away fixtures and suffering back-to-back 1-0 defeats.

The numbers highlight the extent of Lugazi’s struggles under Sempigi, with no wins, just two points from five games, and an attack that has been largely toothless.

Interim head coach Mbekeka Oliver now faces the challenge of turning around the team’s fortunes as they look for their first win of the season.
