The Mandela National Stadium, commonly known as Namboole, has reached a significant milestone with the completion of the first phase of its extensive renovation, according to Project Manager Lt Col Eng Peter Kidemuka.
This phase included repainting, improving the turf and the laying of a new national athletics track. These have now been finalized.
Lt. Col. Kidemuka stated that with this phase complete, attention is now shifting to the next set of upgrades.
“The first phase of the work is now done, and we are preparing for the second phase, which involves upgrading the stadium turf to a hybrid surface,” he noted.
This turf upgrade is essential as Uganda prepares to co-host the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) in February next year.
The planned hybrid turf will allow the stadium to host many games in a short period of time, as this will be the case when Uganda hosts CHAN.
However, the implementation of this next phase is contingent on the release of funds from the government.
Lt. Col. Kidemuka emphasized that the project’s progression hinges on timely financial backing to meet CHAN deadlines.
Beyond the turf upgrade, other expansion plans for the stadium have also been proposed.
These include roofing the entire stadium and increasing the VIP section to accommodate more high-profile guests.
If approved, these modifications will further elevate the stature of Namboole as one of the premier sporting facilities in East Africa.
