Reigning Uganda WNBA champions, JKL Lady Dolphins, have began their 2024 FIBA Africa Zone V Women’s Basketball League Qualifiers campaign in commanding fashion, overpowering Burundi’s Young Sisters 91-54 in Zanzibar.
Despite only fielding five players due to logistical challenges, the Lady Dolphins displayed resilience and skill, securing a comfortable victory in their opening game.
Star forward Hope Agnes Akello led the charge for JKL, recording a standout performance with 25 points and 15 rebounds, earning her the MVP accolade.
By halftime, the Ugandan champions held a commanding 58-28 lead, which they extended through a steady third and fourth quarter.
JKL, coached by Richard Malinga, is competing in Group A alongside Egypt’s Al Ahly, Tanzania’s Vijana Queens, and Burundi’s Young Sisters.
Their next challenge will be against Vijana Queens tomorrow, followed by a matchup against Al Ahly on Wednesday.
Eleven teams from FIBA Africa Zone V are vying for two coveted spots in the WBL Africa Finals, set for December in Dakar, Senegal.
The Zone V tournament tipped off yesterday and will run until November 2 at the newly constructed Amaan Indoor Stadium in Zanzibar.
The tournament features intense competition as teams from across the region, including defending champions Kenya Ports Authority (KPA), battle for a place on the continental stage.
Both finalists will secure automatic qualification for the finals in Dakar, setting the stage for fierce contests in the coming days.
