UPL Clubs Make Bold Moves After Disappointing Starts

The 2024/25 Uganda Premier League (UPL) has kicked off with a whirlwind of managerial changes, just six matches into the season.

With five of the 16 teams already parting ways with their head coaches, the early phase of the league is proving to be a time of transformation for many clubs.

Mbale Heroes were the first to make a move, sacking head coach Richard Malinga and bringing back former manager Asaph Mwebaze to steer the team forward.

This change marked the beginning of a trend that would sweep across several clubs in the league.

Mbale Heroes were the first team this season to make a managerial change

Vipers followed suit, dismissing Nikola Kovazovic after a suspension.

His former assistant, John ‘Ayala’ Luyinda, took the reins on an interim basis and quickly turned things around, leading the team to three straight victories that have propelled them to third place in the league standings.

There are reports that the Vipers hierarchy is eyeing Dusan Stojanovic, the former Villa head coach, for a permanent position.

Lugazi also made headlines by parting ways with Sadiq Ssempigi.

Assistant coach Oliver Mbekeka was appointed as the interim head coach, making history as the first female manager in the UPL.

She celebrated a remarkable debut with a 1-0 victory over Express, marking Lugazi’s first win in the top flight.

However, this milestone was short-lived, as Steven Bogere has since been named as the permanent replacement.

The managerial reshuffle continued with Express, where Baker Mbowa’s time at the club came to an end after a disappointing result against Lugazi.

His assistant, Badru Kaddu, has stepped in as the interim head coach.

Brian Ssenyondo is the latest addition to the sack list

Lastly, Kitara terminated their relationship with Brian Ssenyondo following a challenging start to the season, where they secured only one win from six matches.

The club have appointed Wasswa Bbosa, a former Express head coach, as Ssenyondo’s successor.

These early changes indicate a sense of urgency among UPL clubs to achieve success in the league, with several teams looking to capitalize on fresh leadership to revitalize their campaigns.
