The cycling community is abuzz with excitement as the Kawempe Cycling Club prepares to host its inaugural championship on December 17, 2024.
This highly anticipated event is set to attract top cyclists from Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, and Rwanda, promising a thrilling day of competition.
The championship will feature two categories: a grueling 120km race for men and a challenging 60km race for women.
Local cycling stars such as Aziz Ssempija, Kintu Bucho, Khalid Mukuswabu, Mukisa Salak, and Mutebi Mahadi are ready to showcase their skills and compete for top honors.
Team coach Fred Kisirise expressed confidence in his young and enthusiastic team, highlighting their dedication and rigorous training. “We’ve prepared extensively, and their passion drives us forward,” he said.
The race will commence at Gaz Petro station in Kanyanya and conclude at Ttula-Kilokole. To ensure the safety of all participants, security personnel and medical teams will be stationed along the route.
In a unique initiative, the club has partnered with the Uganda Wildlife Education Center (Entebbe Zoo) to promote tourism. Registration for the championship will be held at the zoo from December 14 to 16, with half of the registration fees donated to support the zoo’s animals.
The top performers in both categories will be rewarded with substantial cash prizes, with the overall male champion receiving UGX 3,000,000. Women’s prizes are also significant, further motivating participation.
Founded just two years ago by Cohen Bogere, the Kawempe Cycling Club aims to popularize cycling and nurture young talent.
Team captain Aziz Ssempija, a recent gold medalist at the Grand Nairobi Championship, is optimistic about the club’s future and the upcoming championship.
“We’re eager to represent our club and compete against strong rivals,” he stated.
