Uganda showcased a commendable performance at the 2024 ISF Gymnasiade Games, concluding the event in Bahrain with a total of three medals.
The medals secured consisted of two silver in athletics and a bronze in the boys’ doubles tennis.
The country’s first silver medal was claimed by Brendah Chekwemoi in the 800-meter race, clocking an impressive 2:11.69 at Bahrain International Stadium.
Chekwemoi, a standout athlete, finished just milliseconds behind Greece’s Ioulianna Rousunu, who took the gold with a time of 2:11.66.
In the girls’ long medley relay, the quartet of Brenda Chekwemoi, Fillister Chekwemoi, Mary Awat, and Peace Mbabazi clinched Uganda’s second silver medal.
The third medal was secured by Adrian Troy Zziwa and Said Musa Kato in boys’ doubles tennis, where the duo from Kibuli Secondary School defeated India 2-0 in straight sets of 4-1 and 4-1 to claim bronze.
Uganda’s overall performance at the 11th edition of the Games ranked the country 34th among the 71 nations participating, with 42 of these countries securing medals.
Among the 19 African nations represented, Uganda placed fifth. North African countries dominated the medal tally from the continent, with Algeria amassing 48 medals and Morocco leading with 41.
In addition to athletics and tennis, Uganda fielded competitors in table tennis, 3×3 basketball, badminton and swimming.
The country’s delegation consisted of 52 athletes drawn from various secondary schools, including Mbogo Mixed SS, Mbogo High School, Mbogo College School, Rubaga Girls’ School, Kibuli SS, St. Mary’s Kitende, and Seroma Christian High School.
Uganda’s contingent is expected to return home tomorrow morning.
The Games, which began on October 23, brought together 5,515 students from 80 school unions across 71 countries, featuring competitions in 26 different sports disciplines.
Hosts Bahrain concluded the event in a dominant fashion, amassing a total of 69 medals.
