A controversial end to a highly anticipated Masaza Cup clash has left fans and organizers disappointed.
Bugweri Saza’s decision to boycott their rescheduled match against Budiope Saza on Sunday has paved the way for Budiope’s advancement to the quarterfinals.
The original match was abandoned in the 38th minute due to an injury to Budiope’s goalkeeper, Musa Matende.
The organizers rescheduled the game to Irundu Primary School playground in Buyende District.
However, Bugweri Saza raised concerns about security at the venue and a disagreement with the tournament’s organizing committee, ultimately leading to their withdrawal.
Grace Kaziba, Bugweri’s team manager, explained, “Following the incidents, we requested a neutral venue due to security concerns at Irundu Primary School. Unfortunately, the committee didn’t consider our request, forcing us to pull out and let Budiope proceed.”
David Mwesigwa, the tournament spokesperson, indicated that the organizing committee is currently reviewing a match report from the officials before issuing a formal statement.
Despite the controversy, the Masaza Cup will continue with the quarterfinals scheduled for November 8th and 9th at Bugembe Stadium. Butembe, Busiki, Bugabula, Bunha, Buzaaya, Bukono, Kigulu, and Budiope have secured their places in the knockout stage.
