The Uganda Lady Rugby Cranes have marched into the semi-finals of the 2024 Women’s Rugby Africa Sevens Cup after a 17-12 victory over Tunisia.
Following a strong performance on Day One, where they topped Pool C with wins over Ivory Coast, Senegal, and Zambia yesterday, the Lady Cranes carried their momentum into today’s knockout stage.
The closely-contested quarterfinal against Tunisia saw Uganda lead 12-5 at halftime and maintain their edge to secure their place in the semi-finals.
With this win, they now prepare for a showdown with regional rivals Kenya, a familiar opponent from last month’s Safari Sevens, where Kenya narrowly defeated Uganda 15-14 with a late kick-and-chase tactic.
Today’s semi-final clash, set for 3:51 pm EAT, holds high stakes, as the winner not only advances to the final but also earns qualification for the 2025 World Rugby Challenger Series.
Kenya booked their spot in yhe semis by overpowering hosts Ghana 48-0 in their quarterfinal match, setting up an intense East African derby.
Despite their progress, the Lady Cranes face some setbacks, as key players Sandra Amoli Lona and Tina Akello sustained ankle and arm injuries respectively during the clash with Tunisia, adding another layer of challenge to Uganda’s bid for the final.
If successful in their semi-final encounter, Uganda will not only play in the final later today but will also secure one of the top three positions required for Challenger Series qualification, marking a significant step forward in their competitive journey.
