Uganda’s journey to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco could take a decisive step today, depending on the outcome of the qualifier between South Sudan and Congo at Juba Stadium.
While the Cranes are set to face South Africa’s Bafana Bafana tomorrow at Namboole, the two could secure their AFCON spot in advance if Group K counterparts South Sudan manage not to lose against Congo today afternoon.
A loss or draw for Congo would guarantee both Uganda and South Africa’s places in the 35th AFCON edition, making tomorrow’s clash more about determining the group leader than a qualification decider.
Despite being out of the qualification race, South Sudan, who are yet to win in this AFCON qualifying campaign, will be determined to atleast secure a win in front of their home fans.
However, Congo remain in the running, currently third in the group with four points, and desperately need a victory to keep their AFCON dreams alive.
If Congo win, they will move to seven points, positioning themselves one point behind South Africa and three behind Uganda, making it mathematically possible for them to still qualify.
However, fate is largely out of their hands, as they not only need today’s win but also favourable outcomes in other matches to advance.
Therefore, that could motivate South Sudan to pick up at least a point against Congo at home, something that would enable Uganda and South Africa qualify before tomorrow’s showdown.
