AFCON Qualification a Key Opportunity for Local Talent – Paul Put

Uganda Cranes head coach Paul Put has highlighted the significant opportunities that the team’s qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco presents for local players.

Speaking during the pre-match press conference ahead of Uganda’s clash with South Africa, Put emphasized how the continental stage can elevate players’ profiles.

“I believe the AFCON qualification will greatly benefit the players, as it will provide them with more publicity,” Put stated.

His remarks come as Uganda prepares to return to AFCON after missing the previous two editions. The current Cranes squad prominently features nine players from the local Uganda Premier League.

For many of these homegrown talents, AFCON offers an unparalleled platform to showcase their abilities to a global audience, including scouts and clubs from higher-profile leagues.

The exposure could open pathways to professional contracts abroad, enhancing their careers and elevating the stature of Ugandan football.

“This is more than just a tournament; it’s an opportunity for our local talent to shine on a big stage,” Paul Put added.

Uganda secured her spot in the tournament after South Sudan’s 3-2 victory over Congo in Group K.

The Cranes now aim to bolster their rankings and carry momentum into the finals in Morocco as they face South Africa and then Congo in the last game.
