South Africa’s Williams Reflects on Filling Onyango’s Legendary Gloves

In the lead-up to Uganda’s match against South Africa, Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams paid tribute to his predecessor, Denis Onyango, reflecting on the Ugandan star’s legacy and influence.

“I could talk about Denis Onyango all day,” Williams said. “I first met him 16 years ago when I joined the SuperSport United first team, and he welcomed me with open arms.

“Since then, he’s been a mentor and role model, both at club level and internationally.”

Williams praised Onyango’s impact at Mamelodi Sundowns, where they’ve worked together closely.

“When I joined Sundowns, he embraced me as a brother. We don’t compete—he’s always been supportive, like a big brother.

“His leadership, humility, and willingness to help others are why he’s achieved so much.”

Onyango’s decorated career includes 11 league titles, being named Africa’s Best Player Based in Africa in 2016, and making history as one of the world’s top goalkeepers.

Williams, who became the first African-based player nominated for the Yashin Trophy at the 2024 Ballon d’Or, acknowledged the high standards Onyango set.

“He’s a captain, leader, father, and brother to all of us,” Williams added. “Seeing him still perform at such a high level inspires me.

“Hopefully, some of his good traits rub off on me as I carry forward his legacy.”

Their bond extends beyond football. “We’ve always had a close connection,” Williams noted.

“He was incredible for Uganda at the 2019 AFCON and has left a mark wherever he’s played. His dedication and success continue to inspire me and so many others.”

Onyango is the most successful and decorated player in the history of South African football.
