UPL Preview: BUL and Express Face Off in a Battle for Supremacy

BUL will host Express in a Uganda Premier League showdown at Lugazi Stadium today at 4 pm, with both teams tied on 12 points and determined to cement their presence in the top half of the table.

Currently fourth, BUL sit above Express only on goal difference, and the two sides are eager to build on their recent resurgence.

Express, buoyed by their first Kampala Derby victory in six years; a 1-0 win against SC Villa before the international break, will be eyeing their first away victory of the season.

The Red Eagles’ away form has been a mixed bag so far, with two draws and a heavy 3-0 loss to Vipers in their previous three outings.

However, their momentum from the Villa win has revived hopes of climbing into the top four with a win in Lugazi.

BUL, meanwhile, are determined to continue their steady rise.

After collecting just two points from their first four games, the Eastern Giants turned their fortunes around with three consecutive wins before a goalless draw at Mbale Heroes.

They come into the game unbeaten in their last four matches and eager to secure their second home win of the season.

Last season, BUL claimed a 2-0 home victory over Express, courtesy of an Ibrahim Orit brace, while the reverse fixture at Wankulukuku ended in a dramatic 1-1 draw that saw BUL finish with nine men.

Today’s clash promises another intense encounter as both teams strive for supremacy.

In their 22 previous league meetings, BUL have won nine times, Express seven, and six matches have ended in draws.

Interestingly, only four of those matches have been goalless. The recent head-to-head results reveal how closely matched these teams are, with wins often alternating between the two sides.

BUL will welcome back Nicholas Mwere from suspension but will miss Isaac Wagoina due to injury, while goalkeeper John Okurut remains unavailable as he sits for his UACE exams.

Express, on the other hand, will benefit from the return of Isa Lumu, Geoffrey Gagganga, and Ronald Andabati, all of whom missed their last game.

Coming into the game, stakes are high for both BUL and Express.

For BUL, a win would not only consolidate their position in the top four but also underline their steady resurgence after a slow start to the season.

For Express, victory could catapult them into fourth place, depending on results elsewhere, and mark a turning point in their pursuit of consistency on the road.
