Ninth Aliguma Foundation Soccer Tournament Kicks Off

The vibrant Acholi Quarters Playground, recently revitalized by the UEFA Foundation for Children, hosted the kickoff of the ninth edition of the Aliguma Foundation Banda Slums Soccer Tournament on Sunday 24th November.

This year’s event is themed “Reuse, Recycle, and Reduce,” aiming to raise awareness about environmental sustainability through the power of sports.

A thrilling curtain-raiser match between Acholi Quarters and Kifumbira set the stage for the tournament, with the winning team receiving trophies and medals crafted from recycled materials.

The main event pitted three-time champions Luigi FC against Acholi Quarters Galacticos. A tense match ended in a goalless draw, leading to a penalty shootout that saw the Galacticos emerge victorious.

Rita Aliguma, CEO of the Aliguma Foundation, expressed her pride in the tournament’s growth and evolving focus.

“For four years, we championed the ‘Ndi Nwana’ initiative to support the girl child. This year, we’ve shifted our focus to environmental conservation, encouraging our community to adopt sustainable practices,” she said.

Aliguma also emphasized the tournament’s role in fostering community unity, securing educational opportunities for children, and identifying young football talent.

Ejakait Deogracious, a player and beneficiary of the tournament, shared his inspiring journey.

“I found my team here, received essential equipment like gloves, and significantly improved my football skills,” he said, expressing his aspiration to become a renowned goalkeeper like Uganda Cranes’ Denis Onyango.

With a total of 60 teams, including women’s squads and children’s American football displays, the tournament promises a season filled with excitement and competition.

The ultimate champions will be honored in January 2025 with a grand celebration.
