On Saturday, November 30th, the First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Hon. Janet Museveni, chaired the first inter-ministerial meeting in preparation for the country’s role in co-hosting the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN) and the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) alongside Tanzania and Kenya.
The meeting brought together key stakeholders, including representatives from various ministries, the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA), and the Local Organizing Committee (LOC), all united in their mission to ensure the successful staging of these prestigious tournaments.
In her address after the meeting, Janet Museveni expressed her enthusiasm and hope for Uganda’s role in hosting these continental sporting events.
She emphasized that while the tournaments were an opportunity for the nation to showcase its football prowess, they also symbolized unity, growth, and unlimited potential.
“These tournaments will create jobs, boost local businesses, and establish a legacy of pride and improved infrastructure,” said Janet Museveni. “But more importantly, they offer us the chance to unite as a country and showcase the spirit of our people and the beauty of our homeland to the world.”
Hon. Janet Museveni further highlighted the importance of collaboration in delivering world-class facilities and providing a safe and enjoyable experience for all participants.
She expressed her gratitude to the Ministries, FUFA, and the LOC for their commitment to the project.
“Every Ugandan has a role to play—whether through cheering, watching, or supporting in any way you can,” she added.
The meeting set the stage for the next steps in Uganda’s preparations, as the country moves forward with plans to deliver facilities, infrastructure, and services that meet international standards.
Uganda will co-host CHAN in February next year at the refurbished Mandela International Stadium, Namboole. This will act as a precursor to the 2027 AFCON.
