Denis Omedi’s jaw-dropping rabona goal in the FUFA Super 8 quarter-final has gotten him plaudits with a nomination for the FIFA Puskás Award the icing on the cake.
The 30-year-old Ugandan forward, who plays for Kitara, reflected on the effort it took to craft the spectacular moment that now has him standing shoulder to shoulder with global football stars.
Speaking to FIFA, Omedi revealed that his rabona wasn’t a fluke but the culmination of countless hours of training.
“The rabona goal is a very unique goal, not something you can execute easily,” Omedi said. “It wasn’t a miracle—this is something I’ve been doing in training and games. I’ve practiced it over and over, right from my childhood. With continuous practice, you end up perfecting it.”
Omedi’s strike against rivals KCCA required technique, balance, and precision to execute successfully.
“Sometimes you try and fail, but the key is to keep trying,” Omedi added. “I’ve been practicing these kinds of kicks for years. When the moment came, it wasn’t new to me—I knew exactly what to do.”
The goal also earned Omedi a CAF goal of the year award.
