Uganda’s Loice Chekwemoi delivered a stunning performance at the Great Chepsaita Cross Country, a World Athletics Cross Country Tour Gold meeting held near Eldoret, Kenya, on Saturday (7 December).
The 17-year-old dominated the women’s 10km race, crossing the finish line in 34:32, more than 80 seconds ahead of her closest competitor.
The African steeplechase champion showcased her resilience and tactical prowess, taking the lead after the first 2km loop.
Ethiopian teenager Shimeles Mekides Molla initially surged ahead but couldn’t sustain her pace. Chekwemoi moved decisively to the front, opening an insurmountable gap. She completed the race alone, cheered on by thousands of spectators.
“I couldn’t believe that I could win in the home of champions,” said Chekwemoi. “But I told myself I am also a champion and I have to fight for it. To be a champion is not easy, but I see progression and am working hard to qualify for the World Championships in Tokyo next year.”
Chekwemoi’s victory solidifies her position as one of Uganda’s brightest athletic prospects. Her performance builds on a stellar year and sets the stage for further success on the international circuit.
Molla finished a distant second in 35:57, while Kenya’s Celestine Biwot secured third place in 36:43.
